One day in Kaikoura


As my time here in New Zealand unfortunately comes to a close, I’ve been thinking about what exactly makes this country so special.  True, there are very few places on Earth with NZ’s combination of mountains, two coastlines, fiords, lakes, volcanoes, etc.  But it is not that scenery that makes it special.  What makes it special is its wonderful unpredictability – the daily possibility of seeing something that just completely blows your mind.  And when one of these moments inevitably happens, all you can do is shake your head in wonder.  A recent weekend trip up the coast to Kaikoura, a beautiful seaside town located about 2 and a half hours north of Christchurch, superbly illustrates those special qualities.  As with everywhere in this country, the scenery sets the stage for the incredible moments.  Kaikoura is blessed with the picture-perfect juxtaposition of ocean and mountains, made even more spectacular in…
